Sony has unveiled a new netbook (or mini-notebook, as they prefer to call it) that they claim is designed to be kinder to the environment.
The Vaio W Series Eco Edition achieves a 10% reduction in CO2 emissions during production, through the use of recycled plastics, the Intel Atom processor (which reduces power consumption) and the Vaio display with LED backlight, which contribute to an Energy Star 5.0 certification.
As well as the energy-efficient design, nearly 80% of the plastic parts - including palm rest, top and bottom covers - are made from recycled materials. It is also shipped in a PC carry bag, replacing the individual cardboard carton. This reduces the overall amount of packaging material used. The bag's outer fabric is manufactured using 100% recycled PET bottles.
Sony also says that the W Series offers up to 7.5 hours battery life. It has a 10.1" screen, 250GB hard drive, 1GB or RAM and runs on Windows 7 Starter Edition.
It's available later this month in the UK but Sony has not yet revealed prices. The W Series was initially announced at last month's CES show in Las Vegas.
