Progress could get more into open source after Iona buy
October 01, 2008

When Progress Software acquired fellow middleware maven Iona in June this year, it raised the question of whether Progress would continue with Iona's open source FUSE services framework/enterprise service bus -- what with Progress not having dipped a single toe in the open source waters during its 27-year history.

But in an interview with me yesterday, Progress' SVP corporate development and strategy, Jeff Stamen, said the firm could even expand its open source play now that Iona has given it a story there..[click Continue Reading for more on this entry]...

Stamen said that Progress intends to continue with Iona's FUSE initiatives, which were at ObjectWeb but are now Apache projects.

Asked whether Progress might consider open sourcing other elements within its middleware portfolio, such as elements of the dashboards for its Apama complex event processing (CEP) engine, Stamen said: "It could happen, yes. We're looking at it."

"Open source is a new thing for us -- how you create a ground-swell of interest in something in that way," said Stamen. "This is a new thing for us so in the short term we will continue with FUSE and see how that goes."

"We don't want to rush into anything, and of course it costs money to do open source," Stamen added. "The idea of hobbyists developing the code is a bit of a myth: it is the companies that do the development and of course that costs money."

One correction on Jason's post:

Progress had more than 'dipped a toe' in the open source waters. In fact, you could argue that we were among the earliest entrants in the space. Between 1999 and 2002 the company operated a division called NuSphere where we were promoting MySQL and several related tools under a 'Red-Hat'-style business model.

While that initiative was eventually disbanded—in part because it was very early days and in part due to licensing matters (e.g. GPL)—the company never lost its enthusiasm for the Open Source concept. The effort nonetheless taught us some very important lessons, the most important being that we needed to find another route back into the Open Source game. It wasn't until the IONA merger that the door could be re-opened by way of FUSE.

Today, with a more mature Open Source market and a vibrant franchise under our umbrella we have re-entered the OSS game with a vengeance—something we have been eager to do since we suspended the idea in the first place.
