Charity slashes costs with open source

The charity says it, "desperately needed to solve IT issues that were directly affecting the amount of their online donations by an estimated $500,000". At the same time, it says it couldn't afford a huge up-front software investment to overhaul the mix and match of legacy systems and applications in place.

It used software from open source integration firm MuleSource to bring its systems up-to-date, while also bringing down the transaction fees for each donation by 5%.

Like most non-profits when it comes to technology, it tends to prefer to invest incrementally and only when it provides compelling ROI. It says it’s been able to increase online donations by a staggering $10m in two months.
