Some interesting comments stem from Glacier Computer, a designer of rugged industrial PC-compatible devices, which has just announced shipment of the Everest industrial computer with two options for the Linux operating system.
OK, so the systems are targeted at the warehouse, freight, distribution, and field service markets. But those are pretty harsh environments for any device and indeed operating system to cope with…
...“Linux can be installed once with fewer upgrade needs and the installation and management is completed in one action,” said the firm. “Overall software costs are lower versus Windows. Browsers are available without limits including Firefox, Opera, and Internet Explorer. There are numerous back-up choices and preferences are set easily. Customers can lock down actual users and software drivers are not required.”
The new rugged devices support either IGel or Fedora Linux variants. The Everest has a full screen colour display and touch screen making optimum use of the new Linux operating system, according to the firm.
The Everest is an all-in-one industrial computer commonly deployed into environments that are harsh due to extremes of temperature, vibration, shock, and/or moisture. Installations are traditionally on forklifts, dock doors, manufacturing floors, and construction vehicles. But hey, if Linux is penetrating the ruggedised markets where other operating systems – and especially bespoke OSes – have formerly held the high ground, that’s surely good news for the Linux fraternity.

Hi
Good news for Linux fraternity is that all major IT and ITES companies are preferring Linux servers to serve the client. Due to continuous updation of this open source Linux operating system would certainly helping in becoming Linux as front runner in the race of operating systems. It is cheap and can be customized as well. Benefits like robust security features, browser independence, cheapness only adds to its benefits.
