How much open source do enterprises use?
January 23, 2007

As mentioned yesterday, I had the chance to sit down for a chat with OpenLogic CEO, Steven Grandchamp to discuss the open source market and OpenLogic’s services opportunities.

An interesting statistic Steven came out with was that “on average most enterprises are using 50 to 100 open source products”. The most he’s seen is 400+, while OpenLogic’s average customer is using 54.

Little wonder enterprises are looking for stack and services providers to ease the management workload.

It also helps to explain why OpenLogic provides a stack of 230 open source projects for its customers to choose from. On the face of it, this might seem like a management nightmare for OpenLogic itself, especially when compared to the more limited stacks offered by the likes of SpikeSource and SourceLabs.

While it is possible one of those pre-integrated stacks might fit your needs, Grandchamp maintains that it is more likely enterprises will require a broader set of solutions, which is why it lets customers pick and choose from its own library.

As for the management headache, that is handled by the company’s test bed and 42-step certification process, he said, while he noted that customers can also put in their own test harness based on the automated platform to test interoperability with homegrown and third-party code.

Stevn and OpenLogic’s director of channels and alliance also discussed the opportunities for OpenLogic of partnering with larger service providers. Stay tuned for more on that.
