Position vacant: Linux kernel documentation writer
November 07, 2006

Do you understand the Linux kernel development process? Are you fluent in the C programming language? Could you create new kernel documentation as needed and encourage others to submit kernel documentation? If so, the OSDL would like to hear from you with a view to fulfilling an exciting and critical role that no one else wants to fulfill in the Linux kernel development process.

The OSDL is advertising for a Linux kernel documentation writer to document the Linux kernel. The position is the first to be funded by the OSDL Fellowship Fund, which was created in March “to meet the unfulfilled needs of Linux and open source software developers and provide resources to projects not funded or naturally sourced by the community development model,” according to Stuart Cohen, CEO of OSDL.

If that sounds like a polite way of saying ‘pay someone to do the things no one will volunteer to do’ that’s probably because it is. That’s no criticism, however. There are always going to be areas that don’t spark volunteer interest or the commercial interest of Linux supporters, but are necessary parts of the development process.

“Linux kernel documentation is an area where the community has long voiced its desire for improvement, which the Fellowship Fund now makes it possible to address. Documentation is key to attracting new developers to Linux and easing the barriers to maintenance of the existing code. This fellowship will enable the recipient to improve the existing documentation via cooperation with the Linux community,” commented James Bottomley, CTO at SteelEye and chair of the OSDL Technical Advisory Board.

Anyone who thinks they’re up to the challenge should send their CV to
