Red Herring magazine has a short but sweet Q&A with Linus Torvalds to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the creation of the Linux operating system, where he comments on VCs, corporate influence, and the future of Linux.
The only remaining question is: why is Red Herring celebrating the anniversary of Linux with the headline "Happy Birthday Open Source"?
As Dana Blankenhorn recently stated: "Linux and open source should not be confused with one another." Linux is open source, but open source is not just Linux. I'm guessing Red Herring might be getting an email or two pointing out its mistake.
The Q&A itself is pretty interesting, however. " I don’t think five-year planned economies work, and I don’t think it works when you do software design, either," says Torvalds, in response to a request to predict the next five years of Linux.
Torvalds is right. A lot can change in five years. Just ask Microsoft.
