Some interesting news of open source method and software adoption in the UK comes from gas supplier BOC Group, which is adopting the MediaWiki software and approach to improve knowledge capture and sharing.
The industrial gas supplier has adopted the MediaWiki software that was originally written for the Wikipedia project to capture and share information across the organisation, improving collaboration between geographically dispersed groups.
The adoption is significant, not just because it sees the company adopting open source software, but because it also sees the company taking a more open approach to knowledge, recognising that by engaging with its 14,000-or-so individual employees it can tap their expertise.
It also sees the company going out on a limb technologically with PHP and MySQL skills not available in house to extend and maintain MediaWiki. It has turned to UK open source service firm Sirius, for PHP and MySQL support.
