End of the road for SUSE Linux
July 14, 2006

Novell is set to change the name of its consumer and community SUSE Linux distribution to openSUSE in a move that should avoid confusion over the company's various distributions.

With the corporate version set to be renamed SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop from Novell Linux Desktop, there was scope for confusion, and given the success of the openSUSE project the name change makes sense.

Andreas Jaeger revealed the name change as he announced the availability of the Alpha 2 version of SUSE Linux 10.2, the last version to use that name.

"With current naming we experienced confusion internally and externally between the project openSUSE and the distribution created there," stated Jaeger. "And especially with the new naming of our Linux business products (SUSE Linux Enterprise 10) the differentiation between our business products and community/consumer product is not intuitive."

Alpha 3 will henceforth be known as openSUSE 10.2, the beta version of which is expected in November.
