Timing is everything

"We are first," maintained Novell's VP of Linux development, Eric Anderson, as he announced forthcoming support for the Xen 3.0 virtualization hypervisor technology in SUSE Linux Enterprise 10 at Novell's BrainShare conference in snowy Salt Lake City.

While Red Hat got its announcement in before Novell, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server will ship in the summer, while Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.0 is scheduled for the end of the year, and Novell was evidently pretty pleased to have got one over on its rival.

Novell's chairman and CEO, Jack Messman, also noted that support for Xen 3.0 will be delivered by Novell "a full half year before our competition," while Anderson noted that "Novell is one of the top contributors to the Xen project," with "more than four times the contributions of any other Linux vendor."

With Red Hat recently talking about the need for virtual machine configuration and management, Anderson also outlined how SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 will enable users to configure virtual machines through the YaST tool.

The launch of SUSE Linux Enterprise 10, and accompanying pot shots at Red Hat, were the standout moments from a busy first morning at BrainShare. I had been hoping to post updates throughout the day, but laptop problems (don't ask) combined with a busy afternoon of interviews and an early close for the press center make that difficult.

Hopefully it should mean I have a lot to post tomorrow, schedule and weather conditions allowing.
