It's not exactly enterprise computing, but maybe it's the key to desktop Linux adoption? Italian engineering company Acme Systems has come up with a plastic enclosure for its FOX Board embedded Linux systems shaped like Tux, the Linux mascot.
Made up of six separate coloured parts TUX Case is designed to hold the FOX Board 'ready to run' embedded Linux system for use as a mini web server or network device.
Based on Larry Ewing's original Tux designs the TUX Case costs just 29 euros, although the FOX Board and power supplies are not included. It also comes with I/O ports and a modem port at the rear.
While the TUX Case and FOX Board combination obviously has limited use, it does raise a potential "in" for Linux on the desktop. Apple proved with the iMac that computer's did not have to be beige, or even rectangular. Maybe hardware shaped like a penguin (or any other shape you can imagine) is exactly the gimmick Linux needs to make that mind share breakthrough. Just a thought...
