Novell has been running a survey to understand what applications users would most like to be ported to Linux, and the first results are in. Based on 500 responses so far the list is as follows:
1. Intuit Quickbooks
2. Autodesk AutoCAD
3. Adobe PhotoShop
4. Apple iTunes
5. Macromedia Dreamweaver
6. Microsoft Visio
7. IBM Lotus Notes
8. Intuit Quicken
9. Macromedia Studio
10. Sage Act!
It's still early days for the survey, but as Novell indicates, it's interesting to note the lack of desktop fundamentals (email, IM, office applications) on the list, suggesting that Linux desktop users are now looking beyond basic functions to the next level of maturity.
Whether the company will be able to convince some of the vendors on the list to port their applications to Linux is another thing (good luck with number 6 by the way) but the company is under no illusions that it will need to get more survey responses if it is to convince the likes of Intuit to make the move.
