IBM’s Ilog buy is a “non event” says rival

News that IBM is buying business rules, visualisation and supply chain player Ilog for $340m has been described by Ilog rival Lombardi Software as a “non event”.

Who’s fitter: drummers or footballers? Phil Collins vs. Ronaldo!

That bastion of UK journalism, Metro, ran a story this morning headlined, “Drummers fitter than footballers.”

“Footballers might moan about putting in 90 minutes’ work a week but rock drummers are subjecting themselves to the same workout every night on tour,” said the paper.

Do Macs now rule the US desktop market?

Honestly, you’d think Apple has won the battle for the desktop, the way some news outlets have reported the most recent market share figures.

“The Mac owns the US. Windows owns the world…” read Matt Asay’s headline over at News.com. The Mac owns the US? With market share in the US of 8.5%, behind Dell (31.9% market share) and HP (25.3%), that headline is misleading at best...[click continue reading for more on this story]…

UK shops selling out of iPhone 3Gs
July 14, 2008

I know – who would have thought that a phone that plays music could be so popular? But I popped into the little Carphone Warehouse store* near my office in Farringdon, London, to discover they had sold out** of the new Apple iPhone 3Gs and were struggling to meet back-orders.

“They’re out of stock as far as we can tell – we can’t get enough of them,” said the friendly shop assistant...

Why did Tucci oust VMware's Diane Greene?
July 11, 2008

Virtualisation specialist VMware's CEO and co-founder Diane Greene was ousted by the firm's board this week. The word is that VMware chairman (and EMC CEO) Joe Tucci didn't exactly see eye to eye with Greene.

It's rumoured that Tucci believed the firm needed someone with experience of taking firms 'to the next level' and that the founder should step aside and take a different role at the company she co-founded -- when she refused, it's reported, he had her sacked... [click continue reading for more]...
