WebMethods buys into 'semantic web'
August 22, 2006

Great piece from my colleague Tony Baer today looking at webMethods' acquisition of Cerebra for an undisclosed sum, to incorporate its technology into the next version of webMethods' SOA fabric.

"The acquired company, which numbers all of 16 employees, adds the ability to infer relationships between metadata," Tony explains. "That is, if A relies on B and B relies on C, Celebra's technologies concludes that A and C also have an interdependent relationship." Figure that one out with a hangover!

WEBM is in the last chance saloon so why not make this kind of play?

Isn't that just a little harsh Dennis? Their CEO described their latest quarter as "unacceptable", that's true, but revenue was only down 3.5% year on year and cash and
marketable securities actually increased by about $13m to $175.1m. I think they may have a few more chances ;-)

WEBM has always been long on marketing, good at sales execution but short on technical excellence. They had a purple patch when in partnership with SAP but the fact they've fallen behind the pace relative to others in this market confirms my view they're not in great shape. Adding cash is easy when you've got long term deals and can't recognise the revenue in the appropriate 1/4.

The real market test come at the end of September - when TIBX announces its next results.
